In What Way Is Unplugging Philco A Post 9/11 Novel – Essay Example
The paper "In What Way Is Unplugging Philco A Post 9/11 Novel?" is an outstanding example of a literature essay.
There is no denying the fact that Jim Knipfel’s attempt on escaping from a futuristic government echoes the horrible event of 9/11, etched in our memories for a long time. The novel revolves around several unending passages and ideas that evoke satire to a great extent. The protagonist Wally Philco is an Everyman with a touch of near-future, who is basically an escapist, struggling to flee from the present system of a global surveillance system. As his vexation reaches its limit, he doesn’t hesitate to unplug the cameras in his apartment, GPS chips from his skin and practically rids himself from every other object that interferes with his normal everyday life. He is tired of being constantly monitored by a surveillance system of the government and this provokes him to work with a mafia group in overthrowing the current order to combat control.
The story clearly unveils the aftermath of the 9/11 tragedy as society is now totally tracked by an advanced tracking technology and Philco is seen representing the emotions of every person while trying to confront a manipulating government. Every move is recorded and each unusual action is analyzed to prove non-terrorism. It is a battle for freedom on a daily basis as the government’s maniacal rule reaches its peak and succeeds in instilling fear and doubt in the minds of the population. It is a diabolic plan of the evil-minded media in a ruthless society, where harassment by demoralizing robots is the norm of the day.
Interestingly, one of the destructive characters in ‘Unplugging Philco’ is a lawyer who holds a classic record of suing all the way through his schools and does not spare his professors too. Harvard battled it out with him and issued his degree to get rid of the menace only to see him absorbed in the Intelligence. It is a perfect irony that wipes out every logical thought in adhering to rules framed by the modern authorities. The novel bleeds struggle from the beginning till the end, a fierce struggle of a layman to combat prying forces that are beyond his league. It is a battle to relive the simpler past life in the absence of a totalitarian regime.
