Upton Sinclair (1906) writes “There would be meat that had tumbled out on the floor, in the dirt and sawdust, where the workers had tramped and spit uncounted billions of consumption germs”. The callousness of production in beef industry adversely affected the environment in American cities. The procedures adopted in the meatpacking industry in Packingtown had a direct bearing on the environmental history of the region and America. The government paid the least attention to the maintenance and sanitation aspect of the city and the meatpacking industry polluted every segment of the surroundings that impacted the water supply resulting in severe environmental consequences. Animals were the main source of food, but the meat that people ate was processed and packed in extremely unhygienic conditions. The declining cattle and other animal population spelled environmental problems on more than one count and created imbalances in nature. But the beef industry was progressing well and its raw material was cattle and they required grasslands. Thus the nature-ordained food chain was constantly under pressure. Upton Sinclair had all these issues at the back of his mind in the descriptions and arguments in the article “Attack on the Meatpackers”.
